Storage managers and storage vendors that have deployed a SAN have a difficult decision to make when they’re ready to add file services to the existing environment or to their product offering. There have traditionally been three options to achieve this goal: add a separate NAS server and storage, add NAS hardware (often called a gateway) to the SAN, or use the file serving capability of the current OS choice. While each of these options has its strong points, they also create problems. Now there’s a fourth which may provide a superior alternative: cloud-enabled virtual NAS services.
