Three Ways to Turn Cloud Storage into Savings

January 05, 2023 | Guest Blogger Three Ways to Turn Cloud Storage into Savings

IT teams are deploying enterprise cloud storage solutions to consolidate data silos and provide the flexibility needed to adapt to a changing business climate. But what if it were possible to eliminate on-premises storage altogether? A solution that delivered this capability would provide substantial savings by eliminating the on-premises infrastructure required for legacy file servers, NAS, backup, and disaster recovery. Nasuni, which services over 13,000 locations to over 90 countries, is such a hybrid cloud platform. In PeerSpot reviews, members who use Nasuni describe how it stores and shares unstructured file data with simplicity, speed, and, most importantly, savings.

1. Shrink On-Premises Infrastructure

A common benefit reported by Nasuni users is how it drives significant savings by helping them get rid of on-premises infrastructure. James Joyce, an IT Manager at a marketing services firm, highlighted one of the benefits of how Nasuni pushes file storage off local devices into the cloud. He said, “One of the good things with Nasuni is that we’ve got it set so that if data isn’t accessed over six to 12 months, it is archived. It can still be retrieved, if necessary, but without it being stored on the main device, you can keep it the same size. Your data size can go up but it’s because it only presents the most recently used data. That really helps us, not having to order new physical devices every couple of years.”

A customer in the insurance industry reports having only three physical servers, but 26 virtual servers. According to their Cloud Support Service Lead, “We are saving a lot of space by having those 26 virtual servers. It reduces our maintenance and storage costs. We have saved a lot there.”

Another Nasuni customer, a construction company, often has to set up temporary offices at job sites anywhere from a building to a stretch of highway. A Sr. IT Network Infrastructure Engineer at the company says they no longer need to purchase hardware for those locations. “Instead, we have been able to access other edge appliances within the company,” he explains. “We can utilize existing hardware and don’t need to buy new hardware for a particular job. That has certainly saved a lot of money on hardware – on the order of a few thousand dollars for the cost of a job-site server.”

2. Shift from Capex to Opex

The transition from capex to opex enterprise cloud storage with Nasuni also yields savings. Jeff Pisano, Head of Information Technology at a financial services firm, said eliminating on-premises infrastructure has reduced their costs by a good 50 percent.

Pasquale Saccomanno, a Chief Information Officer at a construction firm, explained that his company doesn’t have to continue to buy storage capacity as they did before. “In this regard, it has reduced our SAN refresh costs.

A marketing services firm found that switching to Nasuni translated into significantly lower operating costs, per their System Administrator. “We have saved six figures,” he reported. “Our capital costs have been reduced because we don’t have to buy as much excess capacity. It has been reduced by 75%.

Other PeerSpot members are also enjoying lower costs because of Nasuni. One example is a Managing Director of IT at a construction company, who says his firm’s capital costs have been reduced by over 80%. He explained, “Nasuni has decreased capital costs because you don’t need to buy as much excess capacity. The CapEx cost is definitely lower with Nasuni. It is only when we either need to upgrade an appliance in an office or if we need to purchase appliances for new offices that there are CapEx costs. The rest of it is an OpEx cost.”

3. Eliminate Backup

Nasuni also saves its customers by consolidating multiple solutions into a single platform. For example, Nasuni provides automatic data protection, eliminating the need for separate backup or DR products. Joe Marando, the CIO of JERDE, explained that Nasuni’s Continuous File Versioning saves him money on purchasing expensive backup solutions: “We still use on-premises infrastructure, but it does eliminate part of our infrastructure. It is about a 20% savings versus conventional storage arrays and backup solutions. It has reduced our capital cost by about 40%.”

A Team Lead at a tech services company said in his review that using the solution has helped to reduce the time it takes to recover data in the event of a disaster. Moreover, it lowered their cost of operations and reduced their workload. He added, “Our savings through using Nasuni is approximately 35%.”

Achieving ROI

Nasuni prides itself on accelerating its customers’ ROI, and another enterprise customer has seen 100% ROI with Nasuni. This engineer said Nasuni has helped decrease capital costs by 66% since they don’t need to buy as much excess capacity. He remarked, “For some sites, it has helped us to eliminate on-premises infrastructure. For our enterprise, there are four major data center locations. This solution helped us by having us avoid investing in on-premises infrastructure-related costs, saving us about 50%.”

What Customers Say

As more and more enterprises and large organizations move to cloud file storage and file data services, it’s important to search for a customer-validated solution that does more than simply store your files. Nasuni helps its enterprise customers leverage the scale of the cloud, while reducing on-premises infrastructure, switching storage to a flexible operating expenditure, and providing added benefits such as accelerated recoveries.
