Simplicity Meets Scale with New Nasuni Files for Google Cloud

June 02, 2021 | David Grant Simplicity Meets Scale with New Nasuni Files for Google Cloud

Back in February we were fired up to announce our strategic partnership with Google Cloud. We were so excited because of the synergy between Google Cloud’ object storage and our unique object-based file storage platform. We knew that we were going to be able to offer the simplest, fastest and lowest cost cloud file storage in the market. Now 3 months later, we are delivering on that promise with a new game changing cloud offering. Nasuni Files for Google Cloud offers customers a simple monthly billed service that consolidates all NAS and file servers in the cloud. This delivers incredible durability, scale and cost savings compared to traditional hardware-based file storage or lift-and-shift cloud offerings. Customers can choose a complete cloud-native deployment or a hybrid cloud deployment with edge caching VMs. We are so sure this is the simplest solution in the market that we are offering free onboarding and migration services for the first 20TB moved to the cloud!

We already know that hardware-based NAS and Windows File Servers are not the future. I’ve written about how the pandemic forced enterprise IT to rethink hardware-based data centers and how they deliver files storage to their end users. The consolidation of physical data centers, the shrinking of the traditional headquarters office, and the shift to remote work – they’re all accelerating the move to the cloud. Not to mention the rise in ransomware and the fact that traditional backup solutions do not work for file servers.

But that doesn’t mean enterprises are willing to accept ‘lift and shift’ cloud file storage offerings with poor performance and unexpectedly high egress costs at any kind of scale. Instead, enterprises want to transition to cloud file storage in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible, and they don’t want to throw a speed bump in front of end users, slowing productivity during a critical economic recovery.

Nasuni Files for Google Cloud gives enterprises an easy way to move their files off file servers – especially Windows File Servers – and into the cloud without sacrificing speed, at a much lower cost. One of the things we love about working with Google is that they generally promote third-party solutions that complement what they offer directly. Nasuni Files for Google Cloud operates in that space between Google Drive, which is for personal storage, and the high-performance-workload-focused Google Filestore. Everything in between across group and project file shares is a great fit for Nasuni Files for Google Cloud!

The way I see it, Nasuni Files for Google Cloud gives customers three major benefits.

  1. Savings: This new service takes advantage of Google Cloud’s low-cost archive tier without sacrificing performance. Uniquely, Nasuni Edge VMs can be deployed in a hybrid cloud architecture or an all-cloud model, and there’s no charge for either VM option! Enterprises will pay a fraction of the cost of legacy file storage and less than competing cloud solutions, yet their end users will still enjoy LAN-speed file access. Eliminating separate backup and disaster recovery also drives additional savings.
  2. Scalability: I don’t need to convince you that Google understands scale, do I? Didn’t think so.  The company has multiple services with a billion-plus users apiece. Nasuni dovetails with Google’s infinitely scalable cloud because it has none of the limitations of legacy Windows File Servers, such as hard limits on the number of files, file sizes, user connections, etc.
  3. Simplicity: Retiring Windows File Servers and legacy infrastructure in favor of a cloud-native solution streamlines your global infrastructure. Your IT team doesn’t have to worry about overseeing backupsor tapes or purchasing hardware for sites that suddenly need more capacity. With Nasuni Files for Google Cloud, IT manages everything through a single console.

There’s more to the offering that you can learn about here, including the option to deploy in all-cloud configurations using Nasuni Edge VMs in Google Compute Engine. One more feature we’re excited to announce is full onboarding and migration support for the first 20TB of file data. That first step is often the hardest, especially if you’ve been feeding your offices a steady diet of Windows File Servers for decades. So, we decided to make it a little bit easier by helping new Google Cloud customers accelerate their move to the cloud. The faster you get up and running in cloud file storage, the sooner you see returns on your investment, and the sooner your end users can start to unlock some of the unparalleled functionality of Nasuni’s cloud-based global file system – ransomware protection with continuous file versioning or high-speed file synchronization for instance.

My colleague Russ Kennedy, in his published conversations with Google’s Brian Schwarz, has already detailed some of the technical advantages of storing your file data with Google Cloud. But it all comes down to savings, scale, and simplicity. With Nasuni Files for Google Cloud, customers can reduce their overall file storage costs, scale on-demand to any size or number of locations, and simplify their global file infrastructure – while delivering fast file sharing performance for all users, whether they’re working at home, in the office, or on the road. It’s an exciting development for us here at Nasuni, but it’s going to be transformative for enterprises looking to finally make the move to cloud file storage – or switch to a platform that truly delivers.
