Disaster Recovery Planning and the Nasuni Hurricane Giveaway
Hurricanes sweeping through the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean have already begun to capture headlines. Swimmers and surfers are at risk due to huge waves, but these massive storms pose a significant threat to businesses too. Once they move inland, hurricanes can damage or even destroy offices and company data centers, and potentially cost enterprises tens of thousands of dollars or more. Disaster recovery planning is critical for any enterprise, but for companies in hurricane-vulnerable areas, this is especially true right now. That’s why we have decided to offer the free use of our cloud gateway technology, the Nasuni Filer, to companies in hurricane-prone regions for the duration of the storm season.

The Road to Release – Taking Control of your Cloud Storage Bandwidth
Continuing with my new release preview series, I thought it would be good to move to all the network-related improvements we’ve added. Much like the UI changes and the Windows integration enhancements, we’ve left no stone unturned (much to the chagrin of our QA team).

The Road to Release – Feature Previews
Here at Nasuni, we’re always adapting and thinking about how we can make our product better. Customer feedback is enormously helpful on this front – every time someone calls tech support, or speaks to a sales representative, we’re parsing that feedback and bringing it back to the engineering group to see what we can do to improve our product and the service we offer.

The Nasuni Blog team
Today we made a change to our philosophy around our blogs and are now attributing the blog posts in the Nasuni blog to the actual primary authors. Previously we had the age-old enterprise mentality of "don't release any names unless they're designated talking heads." Now we’re pleased to introduce our great team of current bloggers:

Storage as a Service is Here
Since we officially launched the Nasuni Filer, we’ve spent some time in this blog explaining the technology and talking about how some of our first customers are using it. For each of these customers, we are delivering storage as a service. We’re not shipping an array of disks or even a small piece of hardware. The Filer delivers a service, and we have been focused from the start on making that experience clear, transparent, and simple.

Open for Business!
Today, the Nasuni Filer officially moves out of its beta period. A free trial of version 1.0 is now available to everyone for download. Trial users can transition into customers and unlock the full power of the Filer, creating multiple cloud volumes and reorganizing their storage with the resources of the cloud behind them.

Quality Still Matters
There are some merits to Web 2.0 maxims such as “don’t worry, be crappy” or “ship early, ship buggy.” With most startups, if a product is truly innovative, it doesn’t matter if certain elements aren’t quite up to par. What matters more is evolving the products with real customer feedback. This way, customers become an extension of the product team of a company, finding bugs and suggesting new features. Quality is compromised for the sake of speed of iteration and features.

Thanks to the Supporting Cast
Our group here at Nasuni is small, but capable of delivering complex solutions in short time frames. Given our size, we do require outside help, and we demand the same quick, effective turnarounds from our contractors and partners that we expect from our employees. These kind of people are not easy to find, but we have been lucky enough to enlist the services of a few stellar outsiders. They deserve proper thanks. So, here we go.

The Donut Solution: Nasuni’s New UI
We heard you. Several customers have come back to us with comments on our initial User Interface—particularly the cache status widget. This graphic, created by a customer, sums it up:

Calling Home: Nasuni’s Alert System
Nasuni designed the Filer so that we can be completely removed from the data path. Our customers’ encrypted files move directly to and from the cloud, without passing through our servers, which translates to better security and performance.
Yet the Filer does call home to Nasuni.com on a regular basis. We will talk about this more in upcoming posts, but one of the primary reasons for this communication is our alert system. Basically, the Filer calls Nasuni.com when something goes wrong.

Hello, VMUG Phoenix
Last week, we traveled to Phoenix, Arizona, to the VMware User Group (VMUG) meeting, where we showcased the Nasuni Filer. Because the Filer is virtual filer server that runs on VMware, we wanted to connect with people who were already converts to VMware and show them how the Filer can improve their virtual environment further. We opened a public Share on a demo Filer and made it available to anyone at the show, and, at the booth, we demoed the Filer’s administrative features. Users were particularly curious about setting up multiple cloud providers and were surprised to see how easy it is to create a new volume attached to a specific provider. Restoring a file was another popular demo request, and we got a kick out of watching the wow factor at work when users saw how instantaneous it is.

Welcome to the Nasuni Blog
We are on the verge of a paradigm shift. In the future, the cloud will provide the lion’s share of the storage and processing capacity you need for your business, and your local IT infrastructure will be truly thin. Huge data centers, run with an efficiency of scale unachievable in the data centers of most businesses, will store and protect all data and host all applications.
