The Filer Defined

We’ve noticed a fair number of questions out there in the blogosphere asking what the Nasuni Filer "is" exactly. Is it a network attached storage device for near-term data? Is it a backup and synchronization tool that stores your data in the cloud? Is it secure?

Cloud Arbitrage and the Filer

The first ACM symposium on Cloud Computing, which will bring together a range of experts on the topic, is going to take place this June, and we noticed an interesting proposal for a new kind of cloud storage proxy. The basic idea is a good one, but to some extent it falls into a familiar trap: the tendency to look at cloud computing and cloud storage through a similar lens.

Storage Savings: A Customer Case Study

Now that we are open for business, trial users are beginning to upgrade to customer status, which will allow them to experience the full power of the Nasuni Filer. We have gone on at length about the Filer’s many features and strong security, but the appliance will also lead to considerable cost savings in the long run. RAIN: How The Cloud Protects Your Data

Protecting data is not simply a matter of keeping it secure. Resiliency is essential. Users need to be able to access data even in the event of a failure. To ensure this, cloud storage providers such as Amazon S3 and Iron Mountain use an architecture known as RAIN, or Redundant Array of Inexpensive/Independent Nodes. Quality Still Matters

There are some merits to Web 2.0 maxims such as “don’t worry, be crappy” or “ship early, ship buggy.” With most startups, if a product is truly innovative, it doesn’t matter if certain elements aren’t quite up to par. What matters more is evolving the products with real customer feedback. This way, customers become an extension of the product team of a company, finding bugs and suggesting new features. Quality is compromised for the sake of speed of iteration and features.

Cloud Storage News: Verizon Joins the Party

Last week was another busy one for cloud storage. Some are touting 2010 as the year that cloud storage will really come into its own as a business solution—here are seven good reasons to make the jump. And here’s another article on why it’s time to take the cloud seriously. In short, we agree. This is the time for cloud storage. For all the potential benefits, though, there are still concerns, including worries about security and reliability. The Filer overcomes these potential weaknesses through strong security and a rigorous testing program
