Compressing Costs with OpenPGP

In previous posts we’ve discussed why we chose OpenPGP as the heart of Nasuni’s security framework. Security has been one of our primary concerns from the very start, and OpenPGP is one of the most widely used, vetted, discussed, and attacked encryption standards in the world. We detailed a few of its security benefits here and will dig even deeper in our forthcoming security white paper.

But there is one benefit of OpenPGP that we haven’t discussed. It saves our customers money.

Using OpenPGP, the Nasuni Filer compresses data before sending it to the cloud, so that the amount of data stored is reduced. This screen shot, showing the volume with and without compression, is from an actual customer’s account:

Storage Savings

Since clouds charge customers based on the volume of data stored, compression creates immediate cost savings. Without compression, this customer would be charged for 67.1 GB, but with the Filer, they only pay for 37.7 GB. That’s a 44% reduction.

OpenPGP supports several different compression algorithms. Nasuni automatically generates keys for our customers using the ZLIB compression algorithm, but we also offer a choice. If customers want to customize the compression behavior of the Filer for their environment, they can use the ZIP or BZip2 algorithms instead. (For the gory technical details, see here.)

Customers can also pick different OpenPGP-approved algorithms for different cloud volumes. Regardless of which one they choose, though, the amount of data stored in the cloud will shrink. And that means they will save money.

A version of the screen shot above is updated regularly for each customer, so our clients can visit their “My Account” page and track their savings. The Filer stores, organizes, and secures data, but this way, our customers can easily see that the technology helps them meet their budget, too.
