Does Your Business Have a DR Plan?
Disasters happen, and they can be crippling to modern businesses, whether they’re the result of malicious security attacks, power outages, hurricanes or floods. Despite numerous improvements in the disaster recovery solutions being offered today, most businesses still haven’t established a disaster recovery plan.
Readwriteweb recently summarized the results of a new survey on the subject from Symantec. We weren’t entirely surpised to see the numbers. A few findings that stand out:
- 50% of SMBs don’t have a disaster recovery plan
- 41% say it never occurred to them to create one
- 40% say disaster recovery is not a priority
- 14% have no intention of creating a DR plan
Granted, there are businesses out there that don’t rely heavily on computer systems and software, yet for most modern companies, losing access to data is no minor concern. The Symantec study notes that small businesses can lose up to $12,500 per day due to a disaster. Another report estimates that the price of a lost megabyte can be more than $10,000.
And the risk for these companies is real: 65% of small businesses are located in regions susceptible to natural disasters, according to the survey. The study also noted that a large percentage of the companies that now have DR plans in place executed them because of an event.
There are many different disaster recovery solutions on the market today and it’s not always easy to choose the one that’s right for your business. To assist with that choice, we suggest considering these five key metrics: data integrity, security, cost, downtime and simplicity.
Data integrity and security should be important to every business. If your chosen DR solution fails to protect your data, or ends up compromising it, then you won’t exactly recover. Cost considerations vary – large enterprises with sensitive data will clearly be willing to pay more to guarantee a fast, effective recovery.
Downtime may also be specific to your business. Can you afford to lose access for hours or even days? Or will you need to be up and running in as little as 15 minutes? Finally, you should consider the simplicity of the solution itself. We designed our virtual appliance to be easy to use because we believe a file storage and protection solution needs to be simple so that you can focus on your core business. A DR solution shouldn’t dominate your time. It should be simple, secure, effective, and automatic. And if disaster does strike, it should ensure that your business barely misses a beat.
